People say “send me an MP4” the way they used to say “send me a Word file.” They mean “something I can open.” The file extension is not the whole story. Two MP4s can be incompatible. A MOV from an iPhone can be better quality than a “universal” MP4 that was crushed twice.
Choosing a format is choosing who can play the file, how big it is, and whether you can edit it later. VideoDownloaderX and a converter exist so you can land on one boring default for sharing and keep a better master for yourself.
This is the practical map: MP4, WebM, MOV, and when to convert.
MP4 is a container, not a promise
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) holds video, audio, and sometimes subtitles. The video is often H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC). Audio is often AAC. H.264 plus AAC in MP4 is the most compatible combo on Earth: phones, TVs, browsers, editors.
H.265 in MP4 is smaller at the same look, and it will fail on older laptops, some smart TVs, and stubborn email gateways. If your dad’s PC is the audience, H.264. If you are archiving 4K on a drive you control, H.265 can be worth it.
Variable frame rate from phones inside MP4 makes some editors stutter. If Premiere hates the file, convert to constant frame rate H.264. That is a format problem that looks like a “bad MP4.”
WebM is the web’s other box
WebM usually means VP8 or VP9 video and Vorbis or Opus audio. Chrome loves it. Some older Safari and random Windows apps do not. If you downloaded a video and it only plays in the browser, it might be WebM with an .mp4 name, or WebM you have not converted.
Use WebM when you are embedding on a site that already standardized on it. Convert to MP4 H.264 when you are sending to humans. Do not email WebM to a client who lives in Outlook on Windows 10 and expect a thank-you.
MOV is Apple’s box, not “higher quality” by magic
QuickTime MOV can contain ProRes (huge, excellent for edit) or HEVC from iPhone (efficient, annoying on Windows). “Export MOV” from an iPhone is not the same as “ProRes MOV from a camera.”
If you are on Mac and staying on Mac, MOV is fine. If the file will see a Windows editor this week, convert to MP4 H.264 once, keep the MOV as master if it is ProRes.
Do not convert ProRes to a tiny MP4 and then try to color-grade. You threw away the headroom. Convert for delivery, not for the grade.
MKV, AVI, and the museum
MKV is a flexible container popular with enthusiasts. Players like VLC eat it. Many phones do not. Convert to MP4 for sharing.
AVI is old. You will meet it in archives. Convert. Do not use AVI as a new delivery format.
Audio inside the box
A perfect video with PCM audio in a weird container will fail on a phone. AAC in MP4 is the safe audio. If you extracted WAV for a podcast, that is a different file. Keep video and podcast masters separate.
If the video is silent in Windows but plays in VLC, the codec is missing in the OS. Converting to H.264 AAC MP4 is kinder than asking every recipient to install VLC, though VLC is still a good player to keep around.
Subtitles
Soft subs (a separate .srt) travel next to the file. Hard subs are burned into pixels. MP4 can carry subtitle tracks; support varies. If the recipient must see captions without a settings menu, burn them in, knowing you cannot turn them off. If you need translations later, keep a separate SRT.
A converter that “flattens” subs is a one-way door. Keep a copy without burn-in.
What to pick, as a default
- Share with anyone: MP4, H.264, AAC, 1080p or 720p
- Archive your own 4K: keep original; optional H.265 MP4 if space hurts
- Web embed with a modern stack: WebM or MP4; offer both if you are fancy
- Edit on Mac from iPhone: original MOV/HEVC or convert if the NLE complains
- Windows client: MP4 H.264, always
VideoDownloaderX should default to a playable MP4 when you are grabbing a backup of your own content. Convert after if the first file is WebM or HEVC.
How to convert without a quality nosedive
Re-encoding always costs something. If you only change the container (WebM to MP4) and the codecs are already compatible, a remux can be lossless. If you must re-encode, use a high enough bitrate that you cannot see blocks on faces and text.
Do not convert 1080p to 720p “to make MP4.” That is a resize, not a format fix. Only downscale if you need a smaller watch file.
Two conversions in a row (download compressed, then compress again for WhatsApp) look like mud. Start from the best file you are allowed to have, then one conversion for the destination.
Naming
talk-h264.mp4 and talk-hevc.mp4 in the same folder save a fight. The extension alone will not tell you the codec. If VideoDownloaderX includes codec in the name, keep it.
Players
VLC and IINA play almost everything. They do not fix a truncated file. They do not give you an editor-friendly H.264 if you need to hand off to a colorist who wants ProRes. Player success is not the same as delivery success.
HDR in disguise
A file can be 10-bit HDR in an MP4. It looks washed or crushed on an SDR laptop. That is not “needs VLC.” That is a color space the display is not mapping. Convert to SDR for the family send; keep HDR for the archive if you have an HDR screen and a pipeline.
B-frames and old devices
High-profile H.264 with lots of B-frames stutters on cheap TVs. A “compatibility” convert uses a simpler profile. If a hotel TV USB playback fails, this is a usual cause. Re-encode with a universal preset, not a higher bitrate of the same profile.
Pick the format for the next human and the next piece of software, not for the logo on the container. MP4 H.264 is the handshake. Everything else is a specialist. Convert on purpose with VideoDownloaderX or a dedicated converter, keep a master, and stop arguing about which three-letter extension is “better.” Better is the one that opens on the device in front of you and still looks like the video you meant to keep.
A one-page studio cheat sheet
Print this next to the editor. Delivery to a normal human: MP4 H.264 AAC. Delivery to a Mac colorist: ProRes MOV if they asked for it. Delivery to a website that already standardized on WebM: WebM plus an MP4 fallback if you can. Archive: keep the camera original plus one H.264 1080p proxy if the original is huge.
When someone emails “the MOV won’t open,” they usually mean Windows cannot decode HEVC. Convert. Do not tell them to buy a Mac. When someone emails “the MP4 is huge,” they may have ProRes in an MP4 wrapper or 4K. Probe it, then convert. VideoDownloaderX plus a converter is how you stop guessing from the three-letter name.
If a file plays in the browser and nowhere else, think WebM or HEVC. Convert once. Keep the source. Name both. That is the format job.
